2000 Recognition Award Winners
The 2000 Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air Recognition Award goes to:
City of West Allis
- Planted over 300 trees.
- Built a new energy efficient library and police station.
- Purchased a new natural gas vehicle for their police department.
- Adopted a Smart Growth "Development Infill" Strategy, which has become a corner stone of the City's aggressive redevelopment initiatives. In 2000, their redevelopment activities included more than 13 different sites throughout the city.
U.S. Postal Service Vehicle Maintenance Facility
- Reduced VOC emissions by replacing solvent-based primer and topcoat paints with a water-based paint.
- Participated in the Milwaukee County Transit System's VanPool and ValuePass programs.
- Regularly tested all vehicles serviced by the Milwaukee VMF for emissions.
- Participated in "Careers on Wheels" elementary school program educating children on alternative fuels, vehicle maintenance and cleaner air.
Wisconsin Electric/ Wisconsin Gas
- Provided commuter benefits to over 300 employees, ranging from commuter value programs to special car-pool parking.
- "Partner" sponsored Milwaukee Bikes to Work Week.
- Provided secure bike racks and shower facilities for summer long bike commuting.
- Signed the first Environmental Cooperative Agreement with the DNR to improve the environmental and economic performance of its Pleasant Prairie Power Plant, near Kenosha.
Honorable Mention goes to:
Wisconsin Paperboard Corporation
- Voluntarily installed a new low-NOx boiler.
- New boiler has about 1/7 the potential NOx emissions as compared to the old boiler, making it 85% cleaner.
- This replacement serves as an excellent example of what the DNR is looking for in the Voluntary NOx Reductions Program, still under development.
