How Can I Help Improve Air Quality?

AS YOU TRAVEL

Plan your trips before you go.
It's easy! Chances are you are already doing it-combining errands into one trip and listening to the traffic report before you leave home. When you know before you go, you get things done and it helps reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. When you first start a car after it has been sitting for more than an hour, it pollutes up to five times more than when the engine's warm.

Care for your Car.
Regular maintenance and tune-ups can increase your car's gas mileage and decrease the pollution it emits. Plus, properly inflated tires can save up to 10% of the fuel your car would otherwise burn.

Take it slow when you go.
Be kind to your engine and your wallet by avoiding jackrabbit starts. When you accelerate gently and anticipate the need to slow down or stop, your vehicle will show its appreciation by giving you as much as two extra miles per gallon.

Postpone fueling and always tighten your gas cap.
Refueling during the evening and tightening your gas cap can prevent the creation of ozone by reducing harmful fumes from escaping and baking in the sun.

Drive the speed limit.
Driving faster than the speed limit reduces your fuel efficiency and increases the pollution your car emits.

Turn off your engine when you stop your car for a short time.
An idling engine burns one-quarter to one-half gallon of gas per hour. It takes less energy to restart your car than to idle for one minute.

AT HOME

Wait until early evening to mow your lawn or to use any gas-powered equipment. By waiting, you'll reduce your exposure to harmful sunrays and help prevent the additional build up of the respiratory irritant, ozone.

Conserve energy.
Use energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances; turn off appliances that you are not using; in the summer keep your thermostat set at 72 degrees or higher; insulate your home; and run dishwashers and clothes washers only when full. By conserving energy at home you will save money and reduce emissions from power plants.

Avoid using lighter fluid when lighting a grill. The fluid emits pollution that forms ozone.

Plant trees.
Not only do they add oxygen, but they break down some pollutants, reduce dust and act as natural heat controllers.

Compost or recycle.
You'll save our natural resources (air, land and water) and even make your lawn healthier-naturally.
